During the summer, Iceland puts on a splendid show. Reykjavik resident Halldor Sigurdsson captured this photo of a spectacular strip of sunlight draped against a peak near the village of Vik, located in the southernmost tip of Iceland. He said he took this and other pictures during a summer vacation in 2011. "Maybe the photos explain why the astronauts that went to the moon came first to Iceland in 1967 to practice their lunar trip," he said.
While visiting Boulder Beach in South Africa, Ron Rivers saw a little penguin peering out from under a boardwalk. He says the penguin wasn't trapped and was able to join the rest of his colony later.
Uluru, otherwise known as Ayers Rock, is a large sandstone rock formation in Northern Territory, Australia. Anusha Mookherjee took this photo back in 2011 and said the visit was calming. "There is absolutely no noise pollution, and only families sitting around waiting for the sunset," she said.

This elephant "proceeded to walk up to me and sniffed me with her trunk. She almost sniffed the end of my lens!" said Christopher Cromwell. "Once she got a good sniff of me, she seemed to calm down and I snapped this photo. It was amazing to have this massive yet gentle creature seem to accept my presence with her."
