"Family Ties" was as '80s as leg warmers and Rubik's Cubes. The NBC sitcom about the Keaton family won Emmy Awards and brought recognition to its creator Gary David Goldberg, who died June 22 of a brain tumor. The cast of the show became major stars. 
Michael J. Fox stole the show as conservative teen Alex P. Keaton, who often clashed with his more liberal parents. Fox went on to star in another Goldberg production, "Spin City." This fall he will return to NBC as the star of "The Michael J. Fox Show," which is loosely based on his life and struggle with Parkinson's disease. 
Meredith Baxter (she had the Birney at the time) played mom Elyse Keaton and has worked fairly steadily since the show ended in 1989, including appearances on "Spin City," too. Her 2011 memoir "Untied" documented her life, including her cancer battle and coming out as a lesbian in 2009. In 2013, she and actress Patty Duke were cast as a lesbian couple on "Glee." 
Justine Bateman's Mallory Keaton wasn't the brightest bulb, but the actress is actually enrolled as a student at UCLA. When she's not busy tweeting, the mother of two has continued acting. She appeared on "Arrested Development" with her brother Jason, and she recently popped up on an episode of ABC's "Modern Family." 
Michael Gross was the quintessential hippie dad Steven Keaton on "Family Ties." He has appeared in the "Tremors" movie franchise and in guest appearances on TV shows including "Law & Order: SVU." 
Tina Yothers was pretty spunky as youngest sister Jennifer Keaton, and the married mother of two showed she still had that spirit in 2006 as a cast member on VH1's "Celebrity Fit Club." In 2012, she appeared on an episode of ABC's "Celebrity Wife Swap." 
Marc Price was adorably goofy as Irwin "Skippy" Handelman. He stuck with comedy and in 2006 was a contestant on "Last Comic Standing." (CNN) -- Gary David Goldberg, the writer and producer who created classic TV comedies "Family Ties" and "Spin City," has died, CNN has confirmed. He was 68.
According to Goldberg's son-in-law, Rob Dubbin, Goldberg passed away at his Montecito, California, home on June 22, just three days shy of what would've been his 69th birthday. The cause was a brain tumor.
Goldberg, a Brooklyn native, collected seven Emmy nominations over the course of his career and won two of them. He picked up an outstanding drama series Emmy in 1979 for CBS' "Lou Grant," and an outstanding writing in a comedy series Emmy for "Family Ties" in 1987.
Goldberg contributed to "M*A*S*H," "The Tony Randall Show" and "The Bob Newhart Show" during the '70s before taking inspiration from his life and the lives of his friends to create "Family Ties."

David "Deacon" Jones, who is credited with coining the term "sacking the quarterback" during his stint as one of the greatest defensive ends in the NFL, has died. 
Democratic Sen. Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey died June 3 of viral pneumonia, his office said. Lautenberg, 89, had been the Senate's last surviving veteran of World War II. 
Actress Jean Stapleton, best known for her role as Archie Bunker's wife, Edith, in the groundbreaking 1970s TV sitcom "All in the Family," died at age 90 on Saturday, June 1. 
Ed Shaughnessy, the longtime drummer for "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson," has died, a close friend said Sunday. He was 84.

Jeanne Cooper, who played Katherine Chancellor, the "Dame of Genoa City," on "The Young and the Restless," died on May 8. She was 84. 
Ray Harryhausen, the stop-motion animation and special-effects master whose work influenced such directors as Steven Spielberg, Peter Jackson and George Lucas, died on May 7 at age 92, according to the Facebook page of the Ray and Diana Harryhausen Foundation. 
Grammy-winning guitarist Jeff Hanneman, a founding member of the heavy metal band Slayer, died on May 2 of liver failure. He was 49.

The Lakers won 10 NBA championships and 16 Western Conference titles under Buss' ownership. 
Country singer Mindy McCready was found dead on February 17 of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said. She was 37. During her career, McCready landed 14 songs and six albums on the Billboard country charts. 
Ed Koch, the brash former New York mayor, died February 1 of congestive heart failure at 88, his spokesman said.

Photos: People we lost in 2013 The NBC sitcom, which became a defining series for the network during its seven season run from 1982 to 1989, centered on the cultural differences between a pair of liberal parents (Meredith Baxter and Michael Gross as Elyse and Steven Keaton) and their more conservative kids who were coming of age during the Reagan administration.
A young Michael J. Fox had a breakout role as the Keatons' son, Alex. Justine Bateman and Tina Yothers played his sisters, Mallory and Jennifer, while Brian Bonsall later joined the series as younger brother Andy.
Goldberg teamed up again with Fox in 1996 for the comedy "Spin City," which Goldberg co-created with Bill Lawrence.
Fox, now 52, said in a statement that it is with a "full heart" that he says "goodbye to my mentor, benefactor, partner, second father and beloved friend, Gary David Goldberg. He touched so many with his enormous talent and generous spirit. He changed my life profoundly. Love to [his wife] Diana and all of Gary's family."
Actress Courteney Cox, who played Lauren Miller on "Family Ties," also fondly remembers Goldberg as a supreme educator.
"My thoughts and prayers are with Gary David Goldberg's family," she tweeted Monday. "A wonderful man who taught me so much."
Charlie Sheen, who worked with Goldberg on "Spin City," echoed that gratitude in his tweet, calling Goldberg his "sitcom mentor" and a "genius." "He's the sole reason I have a TV career," Sheen wrote.
Goldberg, who also created the early '90s drama "Brooklyn Bridge," worked in film as well. He wrote the screenplays for 1989's "Dad," 1995's "Bye Bye Love" and 2005's "Must Love Dogs," all of which he also produced.
