(CNN) -- This is a busy of week of discussions on whether the United States should use military force to punish the Syrian government for the reported use of chemical weapons in its civil war.
Congress will not vote on President Barack Obama's request to authorize the use of force until after it officially returns from recess September 9.
Here is what is expected this week:
TUESDAY
-- Obama meets with House Speaker John Boehner, House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi and leaders of the key congressional national security committees at 9:45 a.m.
-- The Senate Foreign Relations Committee plans an open hearing on Syria. Secretary of State John Kerry, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey will appear, starting at 2:30 p.m. Earlier, the panel receives a classified briefing.
-- U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon briefs the 10 non-permanent members of U.N. Security Council on Syria and the status of the investigation by chemical weapons inspectors.
-- The U.N. High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, Angela Kane, briefs nations that requested the investigation of the alleged use of chemical weapons in Syria.
-- President Barack Obama leaves for the G20 summit in St. Petersburg, Russia, at 8:30 p.m. Obama is expected to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin during the summit, which runs Thursday and Friday.
WEDNESDAY
-- The French Parliament will hold an open debate on Syria.
-- The Senate Foreign Relations Committee will hold a classified hearing on Syria.
-- The House Foreign Affairs Committee will hold a hearing on Syria. Kerry and Hagel will appear, starting at 12 p.m.
ALL WEEK LONG
-- Administration officials will be conducting classified briefings on Syria for Congress nearly every day this week.
